Malon Smith, son of William and Katherine Smith, was born in Wayne County, Illinois about two miles north of Sims, June 11, 1855, passed peacefully away June 24, 1926, aged seventy-one years and thirteen days.
He was married December 26, 1875 to Mary E. Whitson. To this union was born eleven children, Ida May, Mary Etta, Minnie Ethel, Clara Bell, Bailey Madison, Augusta Agnes, Wm. Ross, Mamie Olive, Nancy Katherine, James Calvin and Harry Austin. Of this number Ida May, William Ross and James Calvin have preceded him to the better world. He is survived by his wife, six daughters, two sons and one brother, James A. Smith of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He also leaves twenty six grand children and four great grand children besides innumerable relatives, neighbors and friends who are deeply grieved by his death.

The deceased professed faith in Jesus in 1888 in a meeting held by Rev. A. H. Bennett in an old store building in Arrington now known as Sims. Soon after this time he united with the Christian church of which he was still a member. He was ordained to the Ministry in August, 1905. He was actively engaged as Pastor of churches in the Illinois Christian Conference from which he retired a few years ago on account of ailing health.

Uncle Malon, as he was generally known, was not without faults, but he was certainly a very generous hearted and affectionate husband and father, and an upright citizen, always standing firmly for the things which he thought was right. During his early Christian years he was very active in church work, always using his influence for the good of the community, the betterment of the church and the cause of Christ.   We could best describe him by using an excerpt from Bryant.

"So live that when thy summons comes to join the innumerable caravan that moves to the pale realms of shade, where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death, thou go not like the quarry slave at night, scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams."

Or using his own words:
            Let sorrows rudest tempest blow,
Our friends on earth to sever,
Our King says come, and there's our home
            For-ever, Oh, For-ever.
Funeral services were held at the Sims Christian Church Sunday June 27, 1926, where the innumerable throng told of the esteem and love for him. The services were conducted by Rev. R. J. Ellis, of Sumner, assisted by Rev. Ed. Borah, of Benton. Rev. John Baughman, president of the Illinois Christian Conference and Rev. W. J. Anderson, of Mr. Vernon, Rev. Hunt, of Bluford, Rev. Land and Rev. Dixon, of Fairfield, Revs. Pennington and Whitson, of Sims were all present. Rev. Whitson, by Uncle Malon's request, sang "Palms of Victory" and Bro. Ellis preached from the verse of scripture he selected for the text it was: St. Luke, 23 Chapter and 28th verse. He read the chapter himself to this family just before leaving for the hospital. He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Pin Oak.
