J.F. Cunningham,
Lifelong Resident of Near Rinard,
Succumbs Hour After His Attack At Home

John Franklin Cunningham, widely known farmer of the Willow Branch neighborhood, west of Rinard; died at his home at 3:50 o’clock last Wednesday afternoon. He was aged 89 years, one month and three days.

Mr. Cunningham had been ill for about two years, but he became worse three weeks before his death. During the last week he was unable to lie down except for short intervals, owing to a serious heart ailment. He was of such strong character and constitution that many of his neighbors and friends were unaware of the seriousness of his illness. Thus, his death came as a shock to many.

He was joking and visiting with the doctor and relatives only an hour before he suffered an attack, which lasted an hour before relief came in death.

Following the death of his wife three years ago, his grandson, Bernice Howe, and wife went to live with him at his home. He spent part of the time with his foster son, Orley Bayless, and wife. A great-grandson, Curtis Howe, four years old, was his pal and a source of pleasure in his last days. He will be sadly missed in both homes, where he was a cheerful and wise counsellor.

Mr. Cunningham was born in the vicinity of his death, Dec. 20, 1856, the son of James and Lucinda Cunningham. He was engaged in farming and stock raising and for many years had been one of the substantial and highly respected citizens of Northern Wayne.

He united with the Christian Temple Church, May 31, 1885, and remained a member of the congregation throughout his life.

He was united in marriage with Matha Evelyn Bayles, Feb. 23, 1879. One daughter was born to this union, Mrs. Bessie Howe, wife of C.C. Howe, who died Jan. 15, 1929. His companion also passed away April 21, 1943.

He is survived by a grandson, Bernice C. Howe, and wife; a little great grandson, Curtis Howe; a foster son, Orley Bayles, and wife; a sister, Mrs. Miranda Valbert, of Flora, many other relatives and a large circle of friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the residence Friday morning by Elder W.D. Crippin. Interment was in the Willow Branch Cemetery.
