Mrs. Martha Simms, 98
Mother of
Mrs. James Downey
and
Mrs. Mayme Hodge.

Mrs. Martha Simms, 98, Fairlield's oldest resident, died at one o'clock Monday morning (today) from cancer.

She had been hospitalized since February 9th. Mrs. Simms had enjoyed good health for her advanced age, however, and had been in declining health only the past year or so.

At Nales Funeral Home

She was the mother of Mrs James Downey and Mrs. Mayme Hodge, of this city.

The body has been taken to Nales Funeral Home, with the funeral services to be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the funeral home, with Rev. W. A. Patty in charge. Burial will be in Victory cemetery.

Martha, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Samuel Miller, was born December 16th, 1857, at Carlyle.

She came to Wayne county with her parents when a small child and has lived in this vicinity practically all her life.  Mrs Simms made her home in Fairfield the past fifteen years.

Early in life she confessed her faith in Christ and joined the Sims Christian church.

She was married to James Simms and eight children were born to this union.  One daughter, Mrs. Olive Young, died three years ago.  Her husband passed away in 1914.

Surviving are one son, John, of Taylorville, and six daughters, Mrs. Mayme Hodge, of Fairfield; Bessie, wife of James Downey, of Fairfield; Carrie, wife of Romie Laff, of Springfield; Mrs. Minnie Burkhart, of Joliet; Edna, wife of Mike Book, of Taylorville; Myrtle, wife of Alva Legg, of Sims; 33 grandchildren; 93 great-grandchildren, and 14 great great-grandchildren.
