Jeanne Book, 60, Herrin, formerly of Fairfield, passed away at 1:06 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2009 at her home.

She was born Dec. 9, 1948 in Mt. Vernon, Ill. to John W. and Naomi (French) Book. She formerly worked in the proofreading department of the Wayne County Press and at Wal-Mart, but more recently she worked for several years in various positions at Target.

Jeanne attended First Christian Church in Herrin. She enjoyed cooking gourmet food and experimenting with different tastes. In her spare time she enjoyed reading murder mysteries and spending time with her beloved dog, Maggie.

Survivors include a son, Gary Short, and his girlfriend, Alicia, Fairfield Heights; two daughters, Cheri Phillips and her husband, Jason, of Herrin, and Nicole Short and her boyfriend, Brian Levin, of Nederland, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Hannah, Zoe, Calli and Heath Phillips of Herrin, Justin Short of Nederland, Colo., Gavin Short of Centralia and Alex Short of Fairview Heights; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Ginger Book of Lansing, Mich., and Jim and Carole Book of Benton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy and Bill Arnold of Carmi, and Barbara and Mike Abeln of Maple Grove, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009 at First Christian Church in Herrin. The Rev. Ron Henwood will officiate. A time of gathering and remembrance will begin at 2 p.m. and extend until the time of service Saturday at the church. Memorial arrangements were made at Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin.

Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the American Cancer Society.
