Sims Native Dies; Rites Held At Mt. Vernon Wednesday

Owen S. Martin, 84, of Mt. Vernon, died at 5:43 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 1996, at Crossroads Community Hospital in that city.

He was a native of Sims.

Mr. Martin was owner of the Jackson & Martin Grocery for 44 years.
 
Funeral rites were held Wednesday morning from the Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon, with Rev. Everett Lemay officiating. Burial was in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Visitation was Tuesday evening at the Hughey Funeral Home.

He was born at Sims Jan. 14, 1912, the son of Benjamin Samuel and Nancy Katherine Smith.

Mr. Martin first married Mable L. Allen June 27, 1931. She passed away Mar. 3, 1983. He then married Reba Turrenline White July 18, 1986.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Logan Street Baptist Church, the Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge, the Andrew D. Webb Chapter 160 of Mt. Vernon; Patton Commandery 69 Knights Templar, Scottish Ritess Bodies Valley of Southern Illinois, Ainad Shrine Temple, Jefferson County Shrine Club and the Krazy Klowns for many years.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital.

Surviving are his wife, Reba; one daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Marilyn) Weagner, of Mt. Vernon; one son, Larry A. Martin, Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Ben S. Martin, of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.
