Cisne Man Found Dead Near Flora

A 43-year-old former Cisne area resident, Sherman G. Garrison, of Flora was found dead on the city's east side Wednesday morning, apparent victim of a hit-and-run accident.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs.  Jewell Garrison, of the Cisne community.

Flora Police Chief Ed Guyott, told the Press that Garrison's body was found in a ditch along the south side of Vincennes Avenue in the city's industrial park area. The body was found at 8:33 a.m. by Gene Corry, an employee of the Flora street department.

Garrison died from severe head injuries, Guyott said.

Stating that Garrison definitely died as the result of being struck by a vehicle, Guyott said Thursday morning (today) that "his department has several leads they are working on."

Although not certain as to the time of death, Guyott said information so far indicates that Garrison died some time after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. There's speculation the victim was walking to the Minwax Company plant, located in the industrial park area, to confer with his ex-wife, when he was killed. She is employed at the plant.

Garrison, a farm laborer, lived about a mile-and-a-half from where he was struck, the police chief said.

The Illinois Department of Criminal Investigation is assisting the Flora Police Department in the investigation.

Funeral services for former Cisne resident, Sherman G. Garrison, 43, of Flora, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at H@sselton Funeral Home at Cisne, with burial to follow in Gunion Cemetery near Xenia.

Visitation will be conducted from 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Garrison was killed following a hit and run accident Wednesday at Flora.

Details of the accident appear elsewhere in today's paper.

Mr. Garrison was born at Effingham Oct. 3, 1941, the son of Jewell and Iva (Doughenbaugh) Garrison.

He was a farmer and member of Gunion Christian Church.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Garrison, of Cisne; one son Joe Garrison, of Cisne, and a daughter, Janet Sue Garrison, of Texas.

Preceding him in death was a son, James, in 1974.
