John Stallings Dies At 62; Rites Friday

Former Springerton resident, John Stallings, 62, of Fairfield, died at 8:06 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1984, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital, where he was being treated for heart and breathing problems.

Mr. Stallings had been in declining health for some time. He was hospitalized several times over the past few years, the Press was told.

Private graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Springerton Cemetery at Springerton.

Visitation for family and friends will be conducted from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Nales Funeral Home.

Mr. Stallings was born in Piggott, Ark. Mar. 21, 1922, the son of Hayward and Alice (Ziegler) Stallings. Mr. Stallings moved to Springerton with his family as a child.

He was a veteran of World War II. He was discharged as a staff sargeant in the U.S. Army after seeing duty in Europe.

Mr. Stallings was a retired meat cutter, who was employed for many years with Cook's Supermarket as a meat department manager at Anderson, Ind. He was trained as a meat cutter by Kroger's Store at Carmi.

Mr. Stallings was a member of Springerton American Legion. He was instrumental in getting the first American Legion building and ball diamond for vets built in that area.

He belonged to the Anderson, Ind.

Eagles and was a former Elks member.

Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Stallings, of Chicago; and David Stallings, of Anderson, Ind., three sisters, Miss Vakel Stallings and Mrs. Robert (Joan) Musgrave, both of Fairfield; Mrs. Pauline Jamerson of Anderson, Ind; two brothers, Paui Stallings, of Fairfield; and Herb Stallings, of Downers Grove.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
