Vernal H. Simpson, 70, Dies

Vernal Henry Simpson, 70, a man who has dedicated his life to public service in the Fairfield: area, died at 3:19 Sunday morning, Oct. 2, 1983 at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Simpson had not been real well for some time but still he remained active and helped care for his wife, Hattie, who has not been well either.

He was admitted to the hospital Friday suffering from a heart complication, his family said.

Mr. Simpson's son, Gary, who is a physician in a university hospital in New Mexico. arrived in Fairfield Saturday, prior to his father's death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nales Funeral Home, with Bro. Carroll Kakac officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill cemetery.

Visitation for Mr. Simpson will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral

For many years, Mr. Simpson was the manager of the former French & Lawrence  Implement company on East Delaware.

Mr. Simpson's public service was to many different organizations over the years.

But dearest to his heart was the Fairfield Public Library. Not only did he assist in the drive for funds when the new library was built but after that he served many years as a board member and president of the board and was still active on the board when he died. He came on the board May 3, 1957.

He was a long-time active member of the Fairfield Lions Club. . . the American Legion . . . served as a member of the Fairfield Park Board . . . was a long-time director of the old Fairfield Building Assn., Later Wayne Savings & Loan He was a member of the Sons of American Revolution and was given a district honor last year by that group for his public service.

Mr. Simpson was born in Wayne county Nov. 30, 1912, the son of Alva and  Daisy (Gray) Simpson. He was educated in Fairfield and was graduated from  Fairfield Community High School in l932 He later attended LaSalle University  where he was graduated in 1949 with a degree in accounting.

He was married to the former Hattie Smith at Nashville May 7 1935. The Simpsons celebrated 48 years of marriage.

Mr. Simpson retired in 1977 as the manager for the French & Lawrence Implement Company of Fairfield He was employed with that firm for 50 years.

He was a veteran of W.W. II and served as an Army medic.

Mr. Simpson belonged to the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Hattie Simpson, of Fairfield; one son. Dr. Gary Simpson, of Placiata, New Mex.; three brothers, Warren Simpson, of O'Fallon, Eldon Simpson, of Fairfield and Edgar Simpson, of Barnhill.
