Brother Of Fairfield Woman Dies; Rites Held

A retired businessman, James Carl "Joe" Venters, 70, of McLeansboro, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 1985, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital, McLeansboro.

Mr. Venters was brother of Mrs. Opal Vaughn and Mrs. Betty Compton, both of Fairfield. He was retired after many years as assistant manager of P. N. Hirsch Company.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gholson Funeral Home McLeansboro, with Rev. Billy Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery here.

Visitation for family and friends is planned after 6 p.m. Tuesday (tonight) at McLeansboro.

A native of Wayne county Mr. Venters was born Jan. 19, 1915, the son of William C. and Elsie Elizabeth Toombs Venters.  He married the former Edith Walker.

Mr. Venters served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a former member of the American Legion at McLeansboro.

He followed the Protestant faith.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edith Venters, of McLeansboro; one daughter, Mrs. LaDonna Hedges, of Raymore, Mo.; two brothers, Rev. Alfred Venters, of McLeansboro; and Wilburn "Jr." Venters, of Owaso, Okla.; four sisters, Mrs. Opal Vaughn and Mrs. Betty Compton, both of Fairfield, Mrs. Sarah McLean, of Winthrop Harbor; and Mrs. Iona Mae Hooper, of New Lenox; and one grandchild.
