Samuel L. Wood, 70, Retired Oil Field Worker, Succumbs

Samuel L . Wood, 70, well-known Fairfield resident and retired oil field worker died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 1988, at 5:55 p.m., at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon from complications during emergency surgery.

Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Nale's, with Bro. Carroll Kakac presiding. Visitation will be Thursday evening (tonight) from 6:00 to 8:00, also at Nale's. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Sam Wood was born April 7, 1918, in Wayne County to Charles H. and Lourena "Rena" (Grove) Wood. He married Glenna Harrison Dec. 10, 1938, in Henderson, KY.  She preceded him in death Jan. 20, 1986.

He was employed as an oil field worker for most of his life, working as driller and pumper for N. V. Duncan and then W and W Well Services, where he was working when he retired.

Wood was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army, and was a member of the American Legion, the Eagles Lodge and Elks Lodge.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Ford (Janiee) Gubbins, and Mrs. Kathy Black, both of Fairfield; Mrs. Jerry (Norma) Vaughan, Newark, and Mrs. Sharon Mazza, McHenry; two brothers Robert Wood, Fairfield; and Ora Wood, Alton; one half-brother, David Owen, Flora; three sisters, Mrs. Esther Pyle, Cisne, Mrs. Dorothy Englemier, Flora and Mrs. Helen Handlin, Alton; also his mother, Rena Owen of Flora; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
