Mt. Vernon Girl Killed In Two Car Collision

Misty Rose Hawkins, 17, of Mt. Vernon, wag killed Tuesday, July 30, 1996, in a two car crash on Route 37 two miles north of Mt. Vernon.

She was the granddaughter of a former Wayne County resident, Billie Menefee, of Dix. Misty reportedly had been at the Menefee home and was enroute home at the time of the accident.

State Police said Misty was southbound on Route 37 and lost control on her 1995 Ford Mustang. The car left the roadway and then came back onto the Pavement, crossing the centerline and colliding with a car driven by Mark A. Hill, 33, of Centralia. Hill suffered only minor injuries.

It took firemen 15 minutes to extricate Miss Hawkins from her car. She would have been a senior at Mt. Vernon High School this fall.

She was born July 30, 1979, in Huntington, W. Va., the daughter of Michael W. and Leslie Menefee Hawkins.

She was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church.

Rites will be at 10:30 am. Friday, at the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with Rev. Everett Lemay officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Visitation at Hughey's will be 5 to 8 o'clock Thursday evening (tonight).

Surviving are her parents, Michael and Leslie Hawkins; brothers Jason Hawkins, of Pontoon Beach, and Destin Hawkins, of Mt. Vernon, grandparents, Richard and Evelyn Hawkins, of Mt. Vernon, Billie Menefee, of Dix; and Harry Menefee, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
