Police Chief Leon Colclasure Dies

Fa,irfield Police Chief Clarence Leon Colelasure, 47, died at his home about 3 a.m.  Wednesday, June 13, 1990.

His death was due to a heart condition.

Colclasure, a 22 year veteran on the Fairfield police force, suffered a first heart attack in 1984. He recovered and was able to resume his police career.

Stricken Again

It was last November that he suffered another heart attack and underwent multiple by-pass surgery in December at St.  Mary’s Hospital in Evansville. He again resumed duties in the department which he had been serving as Chief since May of 1939.

His death came about a week after a nine day stay in Welborn Baptist Hospitsi in Evansville. No surgery was done in that hospital stay.

Tuesday evening, his wife, Doneta, had driven him uptown to visit briefly with Mayor Harry Morlan, the man who had named him as police chief a year ago.

Leon went home and retired for the night.  His wife awakened after hearing him call for help but he died before any assistance could be obtained.

Rites Saturday

Funeral services will be conducted from the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel at 2p.m. Saturday, with Rev. Ron Mills officiating.  Interment will be in Maple Hill cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.

He was born in Fairfield. Feb. 3, 1943. the son of Verlie and Marcia Baker Colclasure.  On Jan. 6, 1964, he was married to Doneta Marshel.

Chief Colclasure was an Anuy veteran, serving from 1961 to 1965, including the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Illinois Policemen’s Association.

The Survivors

Surviving are his wife. Doneta: two sons. Steven and Keith,  Fairfield; his mother, Marcia Case, Fairfield; his step-mother, Mildred Colclasure, Fairfield; one brother, Fred Colclasure, Gardner, Ill; one sister, Joyce rowning, Fairfield.
