Dr. W. Scott Lawrence III Dies; Was Methodist Pastor

Dr. W. Scott  Lawrence III, 49, former well-known Fairfield boy, died at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday, Apr. 12, 1995, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Dr. Lawrence, son of Mrs. Bernadine Lawrence here and the late W. Scott Lawrence, was pastor of the Harrisburg First United Methodist Church.

He had been in declining health with leukemia since last August and had undergone a bone marrow transplant for that. Later his immune system was weakened and he developed a killer fungus which caused his death. Dr. Lawrence had spent much time at the St. Louis Hospital in recent months.

Funeral rites will be at 10 a.m. Saturday from the First United Methodist Church at Harrisburg, with Bishop Dave Lawson officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield. A visitation will be conducted from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Harrisburg First United Methodist Church. The J. M. Weirauch Funeral Home at Harrisburg is in charge of arrangements.

 He was born June 29, 1945, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of W. Scott and Bernadine French Lawrence.  On Aug. 12, 1967, he was married to Nancy Saunders.

Dr. Lawrence, a Fairfield High graduate, obtained a B. A. degree from Asbury College and a Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Seminary at Wilmore, Ky., a Master of Theology degree from Princeton Theological School in Princeton, N. J.; and his Ph. D. doctorate from St. Louis University.

He was a member of the American Academy of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy; his mother, Mrs. Bernadine Lawrence, of Fairfield; two daughters, Charis Allison Lawrence, of San Jose, Calif.; and Sarah Joy Lawrence, of Charleston; and a brother, Spencer Lawrence, of Elmhurst.
