James R. Mayberry, 88, of Naples, Fla. and formerly of Fairfield, died on Nov. 8, 2007. Jim was born on Jan. 24, 1919, in Sims, to Enis and Lola (Brown) Mayberry. He served in the Marine Corp in WWII from  December 1941 through October 1945, attaining the rank of sergeant. He spent time on Midway Island.

On March 9, 1945, Jim married Roberta D. Riley in Wilmington, N.C., returning to Wayne County after discharge from the military. Jim was a long-time mechanic and farmer in Fairfield. He owned and operated Mayberry's Garage on West Main Street for 35 years before retiring in 1981 to Cave-in-Rock. There he pursued his hobbies of hunting and fishing for many years before moving to Naples, Fla., in September of 2006.

Jim is survived by his wife, Roberta of Naples, Fla.; and three children, David and wife Barbara of Naples, Fla., Larry and wife Beverly of Evans-ville, Ind., and Carol and husband Sam Henderson of Naples, Fla. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Richard Mayberry of Naples, Fla., and Theresa Welti of St. Louis, Mo., and two step-grandchildren, Lisa and Kelly Krieg of Evansville, Ind., as well as two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Anna and husband Bill Fatheree of Mt. Vernon, and several nieces and nephews.Jim was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ora

Mayberry.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Richardson Funeral Home of Wayne City with the Rev. Richard McCormick officiating. Burial will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted.
