Elizabeth Monroe was the daughter of Johnson and Jane Monroe.

Wayne County Record

Elizabeth Monroe Baker was born near Mammoth Cave, Ky., July 19th 1829. While very young she removed with her father to Wayne county about five miles east of Fairfield. Because of the death of her father the next year after coming to Illinois the family underwent the severe hardships of those early days when everyone had to make his way.

February 1851, she was married to David Baker. They lived for forty years and raised their family in Arrington Prairie. Theirs was a house of prayer. The circuit rider and itinerant preacher of any church was always sure of a warm welcome. The "quarterly meeting" with the presiding elder and accompanying brethren who were always most welcome all remembered as the annual events of the year at old Mt. Zion church.

About twenty years ago when the family ahd left the homestead, she with her husband, sold their farm and removed to Fairfield. Those twenty years were years of quiet and peace. Their interest was largely in church work, their lives were closely identified with the "Little Mission" church in the west part of Fairfield. It was of this they talked and wrote to their children in distant homes. What their influence was their neighbors know best. They who loved them most rejoice in this, their last days were made happy and joyful because of this association. Leaving out altogether the matter of future reward, it was worth while to them. It made their last days their best days.

On the death of her husband, Augus 1912, Mrs. Baker made her home with her children. Early in October last, she became so afflicted she was taken to a hospital near Chicago, where she died November 10, 1913, aged 84 years 3 months and 21 days. She is suvived by four children, Mrs. Ira Martin, Clinton; M. A. Baker, Denver; I. C. Baker, Chicago; Sherman Baker, Johnsonville. David Monroe is the only survivor of the large pionee family and lives on the old Monroe homestead east of Fairfield.

The funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Mission Church by Rev. N. S. Lanter.
