Mrs. Wilkerson's Father Dies

Herbert N. Witter, 86, of McLeansboro, the father of Mrs. Virginia Wilkerson, of Fairfield, died at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 1982, at St. Mary's Hospital in Centralia.  Mr. Witter was a rural letter carrier in Hamilton County for 36 years before retiring. He never lived in Wayne County

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery at McLeansboro.  Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home in McLeansboro.

Mr. Witter was born in Hamilton County Apr. 9, 1896, the son of Samuel and Nevada( Bond) Witter.  He was married to Ermel Echols Dec. 9, 1919, who preceded him in death May 2, 1982.

Mr. Witter was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. since serving in World War I. He held the post of Adjutant for these organizations for many  years.  Mr. Witter was a member of the Selective Service Commission and received citations signed by four presidents while serving in this capacity.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge, of  McLeansboro.

Survivors include one son, John N. Witter, of Mt. Vernon; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Wilkerson, of Fairfield; three sisters, Helen Bayer, of Mt. Vernon; Mary Brill, of Panama City, Fla.; and Rena Bilecki, of Chicago; and three  grandchildren
