Death of John J. Sloan

After an illness of about a month with stomach trouble and other complications, John J. Sloan passed away at his home in the west part of this city at 7:30 o'clock last Saturday morning. He was born March 15, 1853, and his entire life was spent in and near this city. May 29, 1876, he was married to Miss Angeline Atteberry, who survives him. To this union seven children were born. Two of the children died when quite young and another, Mrs. Bonner Brown, passed away after arriving at the age of womanhood. Four children---two sons and two daughters---and a widow survive the deceased. A half-brother and a half-sister also survive him.

Funeral services were held in the school house yard at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon and were largely attended in spite of the oppressive and threatening weather. Rev. J. G. Tucker, pastor of the first M. E. church, preached the funeral sermon. The pall bearers were: Mack Worley, A. J. Smith, Cash Luster, E. C. Parker, James Canull and Frank Butler. The services at the grave were conducted by Fairfield Lodge, No. 32, I. O. O. F., of which deceased was an honored member.

Deceased was also a member of Ben Hur Lodge No. 101, and Inez Febekah Lodge, No. 520, and these orders attended the funeral in a body and were in the procession.

Mr. Sloan carried A. O. U. W. insurance to the amount of $2000. He was also insured in the Ben Hur society to the amount $1000. For a time he carried $2000 insurance in the Modern Woodmen but allowed it to lapse several years ago.

In 1871 he united with the M. E. church. In his later years he was not active in church work but lived a moral, upright life and left numerous friends who sympathize with the bereaved family in their great loss.
