Gen. Winfred Skelton Dies

Brigadier General Winfred George Skelton, a former Fairfield boy, died Mar.  26 this year, according to word received here.

Gen. Skelton was the son of the late George and Anna Skelton and was a  brother of Maurice, Arthur and Bradford Skelton, all deceased.

Graveside services were conducted Mar. 30, at Main Post Cemetery at Fort Benning, Ga., with full military honors.

Gen. Skelton was born in Fairfield Sept. 3, 1897. He attended the University of Illinois as a pre-law student for two years, then entered the U.S. Military Academy.

He was graduated from the academy and was graduated from Command and General Staff College in 1940. He served in many different capacities, including taking the 111th Infantry to Hawaii in 1943.

In 1944, he received a combat promotion to Brigadier General. He commanded the 33rd Division in Japan until it was inactivated in 1946.

His personal decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, BronzeStar Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and many others.

On Oct. 16, 1925, he was married to Mary Benton Alexander and four children   were born to them. She died in 1943 and he later married Clarkie Elizabeth  Davis.

Surviving are one son, Col. Winfred George, Jr.; three daughters, Mrs.  Joseph (Ann) Windsor, Mrs. Mario (Mary) Burk Burdick, Mrs. J. Edward (Martha) Bouchard; one stepdaughter, Joan Davis; and several grandchildren.
