MRS. ETHEL (BOBBIE) MATHEWS
DIES HERE AT 91
HOLD RITES

Mrs Ethel (Bobbie) Mathews, 91, longtime Fairfield resident and  retired Wayne County Press mailroom supervisor, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 1997, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.

A resident of Way-Fair Restorium for about five years, Mrs. Mathews had beenin declining health for some time. She was hospitalized shortly before her death.  She was the widow of Thomas E. Mathews and lived on West King for years.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Simpkins officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery. A visitation was held at the Johnson Chapel prior to the funeral hour.

Mrs. Mathews worked at the Press for over 57 years, working in many facets of the operation from proofreading to operating the big presses

She was born near Ellery Apr. 24, 1906, the daughter of Henry and Eliza Michels Ramsey.  She was married to Thomas E. Mathews Sept. 8, 1928. He passed away in 1957. Also preceding her in death were a stepson, eight brothers and sisters and three others dying in infancy, and her parents.

Mrs. Mathews became a member of the Fairfield First United Methodist Church in 1928. She was a member of the Wesleyan Service Guild. She was baptized in the Jordan River on one of several trips to the Holy Land.

Surviving are a stepson, T.O. Mathews, of Fairfield; seven stepgrandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
