Wayne County gradually forgot who the first person to be buried in Buckeye Cemetery was. Then in 1976 it appeared they found out....Shirley Coyle submitted the following excerpt from the July 6, 1978 edition of the Wayne County Press: "What is believed to be the oldest cemetery marker in the old Buckeye cemetery, near Geff, has been uncovered. It is the tombstone for Sarah Martin, wife of Owen Martin, for whom Martin Creek is named. The first part of the stone was uncovered some time ago by Raymond Molt. The other day Harry Pottarff dug up the rest while doing some mowing at the cemetery. The marking on it is not clear but it does tell that Mrs. Martin died in 1821. The wording as best could be read said 'Memorial of Sarah Martin, wife of Owen Martin, who .... 1821 and in the year of her age.' The wording will be brightened up and the stone recast in concrete... and preserved." Then, on September 6, 2004, Bob Jones submitted the tombstone picture of Joseph Martin which clearly shows his stone carved with the following words "First One Buried Buckeye Cemetery". |
